Along with winter comes the possibility that school may be closed due to weather conditions.

 How the decision is made:

  • The director of transportation looks at the air temperature between 6:15 and 6:45 a.m.
  • The superintendent is contacted then a decision is made in consultation with the County Road Department and various individuals around the school district area.
  • School is cancelled when the temperature reaches minus 20 degrees.
  • Wind chill factor may be taken into consideration.

How will you know if school is cancelled?

  • When the decision is made to close schools, phone calls are made to the local radio stations, as well as to all building principals, teachers and student phone trees notifying them of the school cancellation.
  • Listen to the local radio stations KBRV or KITT.
  • There will be a person at each building along with signs posted to inform those who did not hear the message on the radio.
  • If you drive into the parking lot and there are only a few cars present, school has probably been cancelled.
  •  If questionable weather conditions exist, please do not drop off your children without checking to make sure school is in session.

If school is closed, will the alternative school (Caribou High) be in session?

  • Please note that although district schools may be closed due to weather conditions, our alternative school, (Caribou High School), may be in session.

A “late start” may be implemented.

  • A “late start” school day will be implemented when weather conditions are permissible.  School will begin at 10:00 a.m. and dismissed at the normal time.
  • “Late start” will be announced via the radio stations, teacher and student phone trees by 6:45 a.m.
  • If weather conditions do not improve and a late start doesn’t continue to be feasible, school cancellation will be announced by 9:30 a.m. via the radio stations.
  • In the case of a late start, morning kindergarten and preschool will be cancelled.

Grays Lake School Closure and how it will affect students in town who ride that bus.

  • Grays Lake cancellations will be made in consultation with employees living in the area due to their unique weather conditions.
  • There may be days, due to student safety issues, that the Grays Lake bus will delay its arrival at school.  In this case, students who live in town and ride the Grays Lake bus will be picked up by alternate buses.

How does a school closure effect activities?

  • In most cases, all activities will be cancelled.  However, consideration concerning after school activities will be made on a case by case basis taking into consideration the safety of our students.
