Kerr McGee Chemical Corporation in Soda Springs, Idaho has had a long-standing business partnership with Thirkill Elementary School. This partnership was formed in 1991 and has been extremely successful for both the school and Kerr McGee. Kerr McGee actively volunteers time and resources to Thirkill Elementary to benefit the educational needs of all our students. Many of the employees from Kerr McGee listen to the children read, assist in the classroom, and help out with special activities for the students. Each year, the students take a tour of the Kerr McGee plant. During this tour they learn what products are made and how the plant operates. Students see the workers in action and learn about the relationship between education and industry. Volunteers and donations improve the Thirkill Elementary playground each spring. The company works with other businesses to procure necessary equipment. The company also donates gravel and hauls it to the school to cure the problems with mud puddles and ice. Each school year, the students receive a visit from the book lady: Ann Poulsen. She reads with the students and then presents them with a book to reinforce our emphasis on the importance of reading. Both Kerr McGee and Thirkill Elementary School have found the partnership to be of great benefit. The involvement of the community through the partnership has been a remarkable advantage to the school. Company executives feel that the public relations value of the partnership could not have been purchased for any amount of advertising. The partnership has served as a model for other businesses wishing to partner with a school. |
