Helping Your Child Succeed
at School

The following are some suggestions to help you help your child have a more positive experience with school.

ü

Start each day right; a calm beginning at home makes the school day much better.

ü Encourage your child to have a good breakfast and lunch.  Make certain that your child sleeps at least eight hours each night.

ü Praise your child each day for something he or she has done.  Have a special place to put school work or whatever is brought home.

ü Laugh and talk with your child about school experiences and listen attentively to what is said about your child’s school day experiences.

ü Stress the importance of attendance.  If the child is ill, home is the best place.  Otherwise, your child needs to take advantage of school every day!

ü Keep the lines of communication open between yourself and your child’s teacher.  Inform the teacher of any family situations which could influence your child’s behavior.  Also, if he or she is reluctant to go to school, let the teacher know so that together you can find the reason and fix it.

ü Take your child to the library and encourage reading for pleasure.

ü Stress organization of school notebooks, materials, etc.

ü Provide pencils, glue, scissors, paper, etc., for your child to use to complete their homework; don’t do their work for them.

ü Work at home with skills taught at school.

ü Get to know your school.  Become familiar with the classroom locations, office, media center, cafeteria and playgrounds.

ü Become familiar with the teachers and staff.  We are here to help you.

ü Study with your child.  Become familiar with what they are learning in their classes.

ü Encourage your child to do their best at school, but avoid undue pressure.

ü Support the school in disciplining your child.  Help them recognize the importance of accepting responsibility for their actions.
